When Amber was eleven years old she came to me one day and said Momma I can't hear our of my right ear. I just thought maybe she was congested and her ears were plugged up. I took her to the doctor and they gave her antibiotics, I want to think a couple of rounds. Well that didn't help at all. So they sent us to Baylor to a specialist. He was just going to try and drain her ear. When he went in there he got blood. I won't ever forget the feeling of helplessness at that moment. He sent us to have an ultrasound that very day, so I knew it wasn't good. Then that same evening we got a call from the lab that we needed to be back the next day to see the doctor. Another bad sign. They don't usually call you from the lab. So I'm trying to stay calm. The next day we go back to Baylor to see Dr. Landers. I will never forget him. He was wonderful to us. He told us she had a tumor in her jugular vein and it would need to be removed.
How do you prepare your 11 year old for what's about to happen? I had been away from the Lord for a lot of years and had just starting coming back around. I began to read books about how to pray and to ask in the Name of Jesus and to use my angels properly.
We started to collect her own blood for the upcoming surgery. I tried to stay busy with any kind of leg work to help get documents and test delivered so we could just get it done and over with. (I can't stand to wait, my mind plays tricks on me).
The day finally comes for the surgery. We have enough of her own blood stored so she shouldn't have to have anyone else and take a chance of getting anything. They allowed me to go all the way back with her just before they go into the operating room. I had my pray written on my hand so I would make sure and pray it right....(gosh I didn't know anything about how to pray then) So they finally make me go and wait. The young male nurse told me that he would call out every few hours and let me know how she was doing. He did call me and I was so grateful, but after 7 hours of waiting I decided to go to the chapel and pray there. When I walked in there was a huge stained glass window. Jesus was holding a little blonde haired girl in His lap. Oh my goodness there was my promise of Him taking care of her. Two hours later they bring her our and tell me that she is tired and they are tired and they don't want to make any mistakes. They will give her a day to rest with her neck still open and bandaged and then finish up the following day.
My heart is aching for my darlin baby girl. Lord I wish it was me and and not her. So we go back into surgery. Another 7 long hours of non stop praying, but holding to the promise that she was going to be fine.
It ended up that she had a tumor in her jugular vein and it was attached to her brain stem. Any little wrong move and she could have been paralyzed or it could have caused her to loose the feelin in her face.
Dr. Landers was in this for the long haul. We were in the hospital for 12 days. She did loose the hearing in her right ear. They had to seal up her ear hole so it looks like a belly button now. They had to remove part of the mastoid bone behind her ear. They harvested fat from her tiny lil belly to pack there so it would look normal. All in all a total miracle.
She never had a balance problem, she could still sing, she was still alive and healthy and of course now you know she has 4 beautiful daughters.
I know that day I would have taken her place with no hesitation. I wrote this blog today for two reasons. One so my grand babies will know the story. Two to brag on my God. Even when I didn't know come here from sick em He still showed up and showed out in our lives. You don't have to be perfect for Him to perfect those things that concern you. He loves you just the way you are!!
